Planning Your Dream Home Download our Buyers Guide

A perfect home includes beautiful exterior, interior design, and well-thought-out planning. Every minor and major detail is planned to maximize look, efficiency and comfort to create your dream home.

We know planning your dream home can seem overwhelming with much to choose from and think about which is why we have created our helpful buyers’ guide, helping you make those important decisions when purchasing a range of products from windows, doors, roof lights and many more. https://www.crystalclearbristol.co.uk/planning-your-dream-home/

Whenever you are making a significant purchase you need to make an informed choice to ensure that any installation adds value and comfort to your home. From windows, doors to roof lights, it needs to complement the overall style of the building whilst maintaining high specifications to keep you safe and secure. Considering this, it might make you think about the things in between e.g. the suppliers, security features, colours or specifications. This blog will summarise those little details that may have big importance when making your decisions

What supplier shall I use?

Local, family-run businesses provide a personalised touch. You know exactly who you’re dealing with, and chances are they will have a good reputation within the community.

Choose a sales team with experience who can provide a full service when selecting the correct product for your project, and not just provide costs. Personalised assistance and bespoke project management is key.

The selection of the product is half the service, as the installation is also key. Make sure that the installer who will be fitting the product is employed by the company and not a sub-contractor. All fitters must be MTC registered.

What are the best security features?

Security remains paramount for any window, door or roof light. This is another factor you’ll need to spend some time researching to ensure that you’re buying a product with suitable standards to keep you safe.

5-point and 8-point automatic locking systems, as well as 3 Star Diamond cylinders, are security features to look out for. These protect your lock against snapping, picking, drilling and bumping.

Which Material is best?

It all depends on the style of your home and the look you want to go for, these factors will determine what material to use. For example, for a more traditional home, you may want to use timber. Alternatively, for a modern house, you may want to use materials such as Aluminium or uPVC.

What glazing option will be best for me?

There are many glazing options to choose from but we would always recommend the option with the lowest U-value, this measures how well the window insulates. At Crystal Clear Bristol we use high-quality glass, Argon Gas with Warm Edge Spacer with a U-value of 1.0 on Aluminium and U-value of 1.2 on PVC. The lower the number the better.

As you can see there are many factors to think about when planning your dream home. Take a look at our buyers’ guide which will go into full detail on the topics covered in this blog and useful tips and advice containing the process, installation and products.

At Crystal Clear Bristol we are always on hand to guide you through the process and answer any queries big or small you may have. We have a team of experts on hand to walk you through, step by step on choosing the right product for your home.

Our Biggest Competition win £5000

In collaboration with Bristol-based radio station The Breeze, Crystal Clear have awarded a worthy winner of a £5,000 window and door overhaul with our biggest competition yet.

Spreading the word far and wide with The Breeze by getting listeners to nominate either themselves or someone they knew who was deserving of this outstanding prize, the entries were overwhelming.

With submissions from those whose homes were in need of a little DIY SOS we were delighted to deliver a special service to the chosen winner Jenny Fry.

Jenny who works in a care hospice and also cares for her husband who has had a stroke, nominated herself in the hope of treating the family and of course their home which had also been through some tough times.

Three years ago their home was broken into by burglars whilst the couple were asleep in bed.

“They took my Christmas money which was downstairs at the time, and they took the car, the disabled badge and the scooter which was in there too. We didn’t find the car until three months afterwards,” said Jenny.

Breakfast Presenter Tony Wright from The Breeze delivered the news with a glass of bubbles that Jenny had won the competition, whilst James from Crystal Clear took a look around the home to see what could be achieved with the £5,000 prize.

As the windows were looking tired and the front door was certainly in need of replacing, she knew exactly what was on her wish list – new energy efficient windows for both upstairs and downstairs and a black composite door.

Following the break in of their family home, security was of course a main priority. That’s why the doors and windows we supply at Crystal Clear are approved by Secured by Design – Official Police Security Initiative.

After the fit of the £5,000 windows and door competition prize, Jenny was over the moon with the results.

“Well what a fabulous job of our new windows and door. 1st class service. Excellent workers. Clean, tidy, polite, efficient. A credit to you at Crystal Clear. Lots of people commented on our products already. Neighbours have now said that they want Crystal Clear windows too! We will be highly recommending your company thanks again.”

Crystal Clear regularly receive five star reviews and customer recommendations which make us a leading supplier and installer of windows, doors, conservatories and roof lights in Bristol and the surrounding areas.

If you’re inspired by what the Fry family achieved with Crystal Clear Bristol and want to take a look at our extensive display of windows, doors and conservatories then visit our showroom or call 0117 911 0272 to discuss your ideal design with our highly skilled and knowledgable team.

Why Choose a Stable Door

Stables Doors are becoming increasingly popular with homeowners wanting to replace their existing back doors. The versatility of the design means there are many benefits to having a stable door and with modern uPVC materials, you no longer have to choose between beautiful wooden design versus good functionality in keeping drafts out.

In the Past

The stable door was originally used in the stables of a farm. Designed to keep horses and other animals in, the door was designed to operate with the lower half able to be closed whilst the top half could be opened. This way animals such as horses could be kept within their stall whilst still allowing air to circulate. It also has the added benefit that the horse can stand at the door with its head out the top half, able to view what is going on.

Historically stable doors have also been used as the back door of farmhouses. Back in the day when the chickens, ducks and dogs would have been roaming around the farmhouse, the stable door allowed ventilation into the house or kitchen, without letting in the farm animals

In the Modern Home

Now however there is increasing popularity in having a stable door as a back door within the modern or country-style home, allowing for a robust and secure design that lets natural light and fresh air into the home. As technology has developed for windows and doors along with new materials, the stable door is now a viable option for all homes with a choice of lovely designs, colours and window options.

Choose a Beautiful Design

There are a whole myriad of choices of styles and colours for the design of a stable door and with modern doors made from uPVC, they now have fantastic security and insulation properties. Whether you want tongue and groove effect in the bottom half of the door to replicate pieces of wood like the traditional stable door, or whether you want the more modern 4 panel door look, there are options to suit everyone.

Choose from a range of Colours

The great benefit of the modern uPVC stable door is that you choose not only the colour that shows externally but also the internal colour. So, if you want a cottagey green for the outside, you can still have a white side to the door internally, that will still look modern and aesthetically pleasing in your kitchen or hallway.

Choose the Type of Window

Traditionally stable doors used to have no window or just a small window in the top half to let light in. Today however, you can choose to have the whole top half as a window. If there isn’t space in your wall to have both a doorway and a window, the stable door can be a two-in-one solution.

In the same way as a window, the stable door is a convenient and easy way to allow air to circulate your room without opening the whole door.

Choose a Pet-free Kitchen

For dog owners, the stable door’s unique features are particularly useful. For those times when you just need to keep the dogs out of the house while you have guests or young children around, the split door allows you to keep an eye on the dogs in the garden, whilst preventing them from coming into the house.

Choose a Stable Door for Your Home

If you are considering replacing your back door with a stable door, we’d love to help you choose the perfect design and colour. Why not pop into our showroom? or give our team of experts a call on 0117 911 0272.

Top Tips for This Summer

As the weather warms up and we head into summer, lots of us look forward to inviting friends and family round and spending some time relaxing outside together.

Below we’ve got a few tips to help you entertain in your garden and create the perfect atmosphere.

Entertaining with a BBQ

As soon as the sun is shining, and the temperature reaches the 20s we Brits relish the thought that summer is on the way. As you sit in your garden enjoying the new warmth after the cool spring, your neighbour gets out their BBQ and you secretly wish you’d planned one yourself as you smell the delicious aromas floating over the garden fence.

Having friends round for a BBQ is a great way to entertain in your garden and you can get yourself a BBQ from as little as £15! Of course, if you don’t want the hassle of lighting the coals, there are plenty of gas BBQs on the market, which make cooking outside super easy.

As the sausages and burgers cook, you can enjoy a glass of wine or a beer and catch up with family as the aroma wafts around the garden, and perhaps even makes your neighbours envious!

Create an Atmosphere with Lighting

If you are planning an evening gathering in your garden, why not think about putting up some lighting? This helps to decorate your outdoor space and create a real celebratory atmosphere.

Your lighting could be singular garden lights that are set into the ground and light up a pathway through your garden. Fairy Lights can be strung around a fence or across the house, emitting a gentle light and making a cosy ambience. Or there is festoon lighting. This lighting can be strung across your patio, the big light bulbs creating a livelier festival type atmosphere.

Fantastically, a lot of outdoor lighting these days is also solar powered, so you don’t need to worry about an electrical supply and you’re being environmentally friendly at the same time!

Add some Fun with Bunting

Bunting is another great way to inject some character into your garden and create a fun and friendly garden space.

Originally used in the mid nineteen hundred’s as a way of demarcating a street party and creating a festive and community atmosphere, bunting has now seen a resurgence and is often used in childrens’ bedrooms.

But it doesn’t have to stay inside. Some use bunting around the garden and along fences to create a relaxed party feel. You can purchase ready made bunting, or why not have a go at making your own?

Games for the Kids

If you have children, it’s great to meet up with friends and family and catch up with the adults. Making sure there are some activities to keep the kids occupied is a great way to ensure you can natter without being disturbed every 5 minutes!

There are some fantastic garden games available, from the ever-popular trampolines, to swing ball as well as giant garden games like connect 4, snakes and ladders and jenga. Taking a few moments to plan for the kids can really make for a much more enjoyable and stress-free time for the adults – and the kids will love it too!

Of course the ultimate outdoor entertainment for a lot of kids is a bouncy castle or inflatable slide – but you’ll need a reasonably big garden for these, and perhaps and adult on crowd-control duty!

Invest in a Gazebo

Gazebos are really versatile pieces of garden furniture. They can create an area of shade when the sun is just a bit too hot to sit in all day and help avoid any burnt skin. However, they can also be used if there is a light shower and there isn’t room for everyone to decamp into your house.

Gazebos now come in all styles from the easy self-erect ones that you can put away each night to the semi-permanent and heavy-duty ones with curtains.

Double your space with Bespoke Doors

Another way to cleverly increase your entertaining space is with Bi-fold doors or conservatories. These allow you to open up your house allowing your indoor space to join seamlessly with your outdoor space. They can make a fantastic free-flow entertaining space, enabling easy movement between the kitchen and the BBQ, or allowing some guests to sit inside out of the sun, whilst still being part of the party.

Conservatories, also have the benefit of adding an extra room to your house. On those days when the British weather is unpredictable but you’ve invited a hoard of people round, you can still entertain without feeling your house is over-crowded and spill out into the garden when the sun comes out.

Thinking about choosing new doors?

If you’ve been wondering about investing in some bi-fold doors or a conservatory ready for the summer, our experts would be happy to discuss the different options available. Feel free to pop into our Bristol showroom or call 0117 911 0272 to arrange a visit.

Stunning Apeer 70 Composite Door

Back in February we were approached by a family living in Luckington, in the Cotswolds, who had recently moved into their new home. They were increasingly concerned by the poor standard of their front door and were keen to get a free quote for a brand new Composite Door instead.

They felt the existing front door offered little in the way of security, which caused additional worry and had a badly painted finish, that was starting to peel away, having only been painted by the previous owners just months previous. Irritatingly for them there was no letterbox, door knocker or spyhole and the door had been fitted poorly allowing cold air to seep in to their home, increasing their fuel heating bills.

Luckington Front Door with Peeling Paint and Poor Finish

We quoted competitively (as our team always do) and ordered them a new Apeer composite front door that would help improve security, minimise heat loss and give a much improved appearance.

On the day our client was delighted that our fitters turned up – as promised – promptly at 9am, ready and able to get to work.

Crystal Clear arriving to fit new door in Luckington

The first task was to put down protective coverings inside the house, ensure the area was safe to work in and then begin to remove the old door and frame.

Front Door Being Removed

This was carried out with little drama and our fitters ensured the working area was kept clear of any debris to minimise any potential accidents and stacked the old door safely elsewhere for removal later.

Old front door carefully stacked for removal

Our customer’s dog was also very taken by our fitters and refused to leave them! With some persuasion he was banished to the client’s living room so our fitters could then get the new door in.

Luckington House with Front Door Removed

With measurements all double checked, the new door was safely brought out of the van and out of its protective wrapping and offered up to the empty aperture.

Checking Door Measurements

Safety is paramount when fitting new doors and this project was no exception. Great care was taken to avoid any accidents but also to ensure no damage was caused to the property’s K Rend finish.

Fitting a new composite front door

Once the main frame was in then the side panel frame was carefully placed in the correct position.

Side panel window fitted

Almost there, we took a moment to make some additional checks…

Adjustments being made whilst Front Door Fitted in Luckington

We took the time to ensure all the bolts holding the frame in place were correctly tightened as our team are nothing but thorough! The owner’s dog got loose (again) and came to check everything was going to plan.

Door frame screwed in

The client’s electrician had left behind electrical cable for a door bell to be fitted at a later date. We made sure we didn’t forget to feed it through the gap and the frame before any door trim was fitted.

Door bell wiring

The hinges had to be adjusted to allow the door to open and close properly which took a little fine-tuning to ensure all worked smoothly.

Adjusting the front door hinges to allow for a smooth operation

We then spent time fitting the door trim and sealing any areas that were exposed and after just a few hours we were done!

One very happy client and his family and 2 fitters immensely proud of their work! The front door has attracted a number of very positive comments from passersby who were impressed by the quality. Note the very stylish metal handles, door knocker with spyhole and letterbox too.Composite Front Door fitted into Cotswolds HomeWe’d like to say a big thank you to our fitters, Lawrence and Luke, who did such a sterling job on the day and yet again showed their dedication to great customer care and attention to detail.

Well done chaps, even the client’s dog was impressed!

One happy dog, one gorgeous composite front door
